Celebrating Graduate Success: MetFilm School’s Outcome Data

By Elise Czyzowska

23 January 2023

When people ask, ‘why go to film school?’, they are usually met with two answers. The first is that the network and community you meet while studying is something that can’t be replicated by online filmmaking resources.

The second response is applicable to more than just film degrees, which is that a higher education degree can be a worthwhile asset as you begin to build your career, helping you to get a foot in the door for dream positions or companies.

Having spoken about student life and opportunities in a recent blog, we’re looking at the other side of the picture today, and delving into our Graduate Outcome Data, published by the Office for Students in 2022.

MetFilm School BA Graduates

Across three campuses, MetFilm School offers six undergraduate degrees, covering crafts including acting, content production, screen business, and practical filmmaking.

For our BA Degrees, Graduate Outcomes Data shows:

  • 79.5% of students find professional employment or further study within 15 months of graduating (against a threshold of 60%)

On top of this, our two- and three-year BA Practical Filmmaking degrees carry the ScreenSkills Select Quality Mark, signifying that students learn professional skills on these courses, approved and supported by the ScreenSkills industry.

Looking across the sector, MetFilm School is just one ranking place behind the University of Oxford for creative arts and design undergraduate courses.

Two graduates from our BA Practical Filmmaking degree who exemplify this success are Leopold Hughes and Rina Yang.

In 2022, Leopold Hughes was a co-producer on one of the biggest releases of the year, Rian Johnson’s Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, which received four-star reviews from both The Guardian and The Independent.

Also in 2022, Rina Yang worked as Director of Photography on the ‘Bejewelled‘ and ‘Anti-Hero‘ music videos from Taylor Swift’s latest release, Midnights. Outside of the music industry, Rina worked as Director of Photography on Nikyatu Jusu’s Nanny, which won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance Film Festival.

MetFilm School MA Graduates

Similarly positive results can be seen for our MA graduates across our seven postgraduate degrees, which include the crafts of: cinematography, directing, documentary, film and television production, post production, producing, and screenwriting.

For our MA Degrees, Graduate Outcome Data shows:

  • 89.1% of students find employment within 15 months of graduating (against a threshold of 70%)

Looking across the sector, MetFilm School ranks 4th in the country for creative arts and design postgraduate courses

Last year was a particularly big year for graduates on our MA Directing degree: Adjani Salmon won the BAFTA for Emerging Talent – Television Craft for his BBC series Dreaming Whilst Black, and in September, Gabriella Blumberg won ‘International Alumni of the Year’ at the PIEoneer Awards, celebrating her accomplishments in both directing and producing.

What this all means…

Simply put, this data demonstrates that our graduates are seeing huge success in their chosen career paths, and that they are making respected and acclaimed names for themselves throughout the film, television, and screen industries.

We are deeply proud of the collective endeavours of our staff, our students, and our graduates.

MetFilm School continues to deliver against our mission to inspire a new generation of creative screen professionals, educating them in the new world of storytelling – across all screen types.

By putting industry at the heart of everything we do, MetFilm School best equips its graduates for successful careers.
