Overview
Ealing Studios has been at the heart of British filmmaking for more than 120 years. First established in 1902, it is recognised as the oldest continuously working film studio in the world. Today, students at MetFilm School study within a working studio environment shaped by generations of filmmakers, performers, and creatives.
A legendary studio
Ealing’s story began when filmmaker Will Barker purchased the famous White House on the site and produced one of the earliest screen versions of Hamlet in 1910. The Grade II-listed sound stages opened in 1931 before producer Michael Balcon ushered in the Studios’ celebrated golden age, creating iconic British films including Whisky Galore! (1949), Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949), The Ladykillers (1955), and The Lavender Hill Mob (1951).
The Studios have continued to play a major role in British film ever since, hosting major productions including Murder on the Orient Express (2017), Darkest Hour (2017), Last Night in Soho (2021), and television including Black Mirror, Downton Abbey, MobLand, and The Crown.
Industry-standard facilities
Today, Ealing Studios combines historic stages with cutting-edge production facilities. A recent multi-million-pound redevelopment introduced a new 14,000 sq. ft net-zero carbon sound stage, modern creative workspaces, production offices, and refurbished studio facilities designed for the future of film and high-end television production.
The redevelopment places sustainability at the centre of the Studios’ future, using renewable energy systems, rooftop solar panels, and zero-emission operations to set new standards for environmentally responsible production.
Study inside a working studio
Ealing Studios is home to a thriving creative community for students. This means studying within a professional studio environment surrounded by active productions and industry professionals – a unique opportunity to learn where film and television history continues to be made.
Students also have access to the historic Stage 5, a former sound stage that has been fully rebuilt and adapted for small sets and interviews, giving them the opportunity to experience filming on a professional studio set firsthand.
