General Information

General Information

As part of your course, you will produce, direct, and edit content that you have taken part in creating. Group production projects you will work on are paid for by the School, but where projects are worked on by individuals, the School does not provide funding, as the scale of these projects can vary greatly depending on our students’ creative decisions.

You will receive free hire of our production kit, and production advice on finding locations and getting permits to shoot in public places. You will also receive advice on finding actors cost-effectively. You will however need to budget some extra funds to cover various production costs such as the provision of transport for kit, paying actors the equity minimum wage if you choose to use them, expense money for travel costs and to ensure you have food and drinks on set for your cast and crew whilst shooting.

Please note that these extra costs do not need to be excessive and that students are encouraged to use their initiative and resourcefulness to keep these costs as low as possible. We also provide support and advice on finding innovative ways to fund projects, such as crowdfunding. The amount you spend will depend entirely on the scale of production and how much you wish to spend.

We recommend that over the course of the programme you budget around £500 for the costs of these projects.

Graduation projects vary greatly in terms of their scale and scope. Some students choose to spend significant amounts on their graduation projects, involving multiple locations, actors and substantial production budgets. However, other students choose to write a script or develop a business plan, and the costs of these projects will be very low. As a result, we are not able to provide a recommendation for what you should budget for this project, but we would recommend that you start thinking as soon as possible about what your final project may be, and what budget you may need to save or raise funds for to cover this.

LAPTOP
We recommend you have access to a laptop computer (PC or Mac) with a spec which enables you to run contemporary video production software such as Adobe Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve.

The primary editing software you will use during your course is Adobe Premiere Pro from the Adobe Creative Cloud suite. This is provided for you for the duration of your studies. Adobe publishes the following guide (correct as of October 2023) regarding the computer specification needed for Windows and Mac platforms.

Adobe Premiere Pro System Requirements

You will be shooting on cameras capable of recording 4K footage so we would recommend that you look at devices with the specifications below to enable you to effectively edit at 4K.

Operating System

  • PC – Windows 10 22H2 or above (Windows 11 recommended)
  • MAC – Monterey V12.0 or later

CPU (Central Processing Unit)

  • PC – we would recommend a minimum of 6 core 11th Gen Intel (i7 or above) or AMD Ryzen (5 series and above).
  • MAC – Apple Silicon M1 or newer

GPU (Graphics Processing Unit)

  • PC – Nvidia or AMD discrete GPU. Minimum 4GB of memory (for HD and basic 4k)
  • MAC – Minimum 6GB of memory for effective 4K

Internal Hard Drive

  • PC – We recommend a fast solid-state drive (SSD) of at least 512Gb (ITB is preferable).
  • MAC – We recommend a fast solid-state drive (SSD) of at least 512Gb (ITB is preferable).

Display Screen

  • Resolution – The screen will need a resolution of 1920×1080, but 2k or greater will help with displaying all the menus, footage and timelines on screen.
  • Screen Size – While there is no minimum screen size, we would recommend a screen size of 14 inches or greater, working for long periods on a small screen can be very tiring.

You may wish to wait until you are a registered student if you are planning on buying a laptop to take advantage of student discounts. In the meantime, please talk to our Admissions Team before buying a device, or if you have any additional questions about the equipment required on this course.

EXTERNAL HARD DRIVES
We strongly suggest you obtain at least TWO external USB 3 (Superspeed USB) storage devices for making backups of footage and projects. One should serve as your master back up drive and the other can be used for backing up your rushes and other work. As you progress through your time at the school, you may need to purchase more drives depending on the amount of data you wish to backup or keep as archive.

Portable SSD devices are widely available in 1Tb to 4Tb sizes and can greatly speed up the editing process when working with large video files and while copying footage from camera media. We recommend that your drive should have a storage capacity of at least 2TB but the more storage you have access to the better.

MICROSOFT OFFICE 365
We will provide you with a Microsoft Office 365 account (email address and access to the Microsoft Office 365 applications such as word and excel) for the duration of your studies.

Your account details will be sent to you shortly before the course start date and you will retain access to the account for a period after you have completed your studies to allow you to back up / migrate your documents and other work.

ADOBE CREATIVE CLOUD
You will be provided with a subscription to the Adobe Creative Cloud suite for the duration of your studies. This includes the video production software Premier Pro which allows you to edit, trim and craft your videos, add transitions and effects, colour grade, mix audio and create animated titles. Details of this will be provided after you have arrived for your studies and completed the registered process.

SMARTPHONE
A camera or smartphone capable of recording 1080p at 25fps.
