Overview

BA (Hons) Games Design and Development is a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary programme designed to prepare students for a career in the games design industry. With a “play first” philosophy, the course covers both theoretical and practical aspects of game design and development, providing students with a deep understanding of the industry’s production methodologies and business practices. The curriculum emphasises the development of essential skills in storytelling, world-building, game mechanics, design principles, and technical design, ensuring graduates are well-prepared for various roles within the games industry.

Module Overview

In the first year, students will focus on acquiring foundational skills in game design and development. The curriculum covers the entire game development cycle, introducing students to game culture and the political aspects of the industry. Collaboration with students from related courses, such as BSc (Hons) Games Technology and BA (Hons) Games Art and Technology, ensures a well-rounded understanding of the relationships between different disciplines.

Modules Include:

  • Introduction to Game Design and Development
  • Game Culture and Politics
  • Collaborative Project with BSc and BA Courses

 

The second year centres on designing and creating prototypes, from research to playable versions. Students engage in interdisciplinary activities, broadening their perspectives and enhancing their understanding of narrative theory and creative methodologies. This year emphasises the development of practical skills and a deeper understanding of the field.

  • Narrative and Creative Methodologies

 

In the final year, students refine their skills and focus on personal development. The curriculum prepares students for graduation, offering opportunities for industry engagement and final projects that showcase their expertise. The course aims to enhance employability, providing students with the tools needed to succeed in the games industry or pursue further study.

Entry Requirements

Entry Requirements

  • UCAS Tariff: 64 points
  • A-Level: CC
  • Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma: MPP
  • GCSE: Three GCSEs at a minimum grade C/4, including English Language or Level 2 Equivalents
  • IELTS: 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 to be achieved in each band
