Module Overview

Module Overview

In the first year, students will establish the essential skills for animation and visual effects, introducing them to the software development lifecycle and the cultural context of the animation industry. The curriculum covers basic art and animation skills, including the 12 principles of animation, and familiarizes students with key software pipelines for animation production. Additionally, students learn to build environments, explore materials and shaders, and create both 2D and 3D animated sequences. Collaboration with peers from related programs is emphasized, fostering an understanding of the interdisciplinary nature of the animation field.

In the second year, students advance their skills by focusing on the design and creation of assets for animation and visual effects. This stage emphasises the importance of research in concept development and asset creation, alongside exploring technologies for character design. Students learn to build assets that create mood and enhance the viewer’s experience, design and rig characters for animation, and gain a deeper understanding of the various roles within the animation and visual effects industries. Engagement with new ideas and interdisciplinary activities is crucial, enabling students to broaden their perspectives and apply knowledge practically.

The final year is dedicated to refining the skills acquired in previous levels, with a strong focus on professional practice and the completion of a final project. Students work towards professionalising their animation practice in preparation for graduation, culminating in a final project that showcases their skills and knowledge. This stage also prepares students for entry into the industry or further study at the postgraduate level, equipping them with the expertise needed to transition into their careers.
