Why MetFilm School is the place to kick-start your future

By Niki Khoroushi

25 January 2022

January is the slowest month of the year, but the UCAS Deadline sure has crept up quickly! If you’re planning on joining one of our undergraduate courses in 2022, you need to submit your application by Wednesday 26 January!

To help get you excited about joining MetFilm School, here are some top reasons why we’re the place to kick-start your future in the screen industry…

We’re Practical

You’ve probably guessed it by now, but our courses are highly practical because we believe the best way to learn to make films is to make films. On our BA (Hons) Practical Filmmaking course you’ll focus on six main productions, which you can complete over two or three years; Fiction, Short Form, Episodic, Factual, Long Form and your final Graduation Project. These productions will teach you every aspect of the filmmaking process from the ground up. BA (Hons) Screen Acting has been designed with professionals from behind and in front of the camera to reflect the reality of acting for screen. Through a combination of masterclasses, workshops and self-directed learning, your skills will be applied across a wide range of practical exercises from auditioning, to acting for feature-length productions.

Last Autumn as we celebrated the very first graduates from our BA Content, Media and Film Production ScreenSpace course, and welcomed the fourth cohort of new students to the course, they were joined by the very first students on the BA Film and Screen Business course. Read all about what our ScreenSpace graduates had to say about their time at MetFilm School.

They will soon be joined by a new set of ScreenSpace students who will be based at our Leeds campus, where we are offering the BA Content, Media and Film Production from Autumn 2022, as well as a brand new course, BA Acting for Screen. Once you graduate from your BA course and find your niche as a screen professional, you can go on to study with us on one of our postgraduate courses. Our specialist MA programmes are each tailored to help you develop and master the craft over the course of one year.

We’re Creative

We’re incredibly proud that all MetFilm tutors are working in, or come from, the screen industries with a diverse range of festival appearances, awards and nominations, including BAFTAs, Emmys and Oscars. This means you’ll be taught by and interact with people who know the film and TV world, inside out.

We’re Connected

We concentrate on employability right from the start and as a student of MetFilm School, you get access to our dedicated careers service, MetFilm Futures, who provide support through masterclasses, career surgeries, festival accreditation, finding job opportunities and more. Our in-house production company MetFilm Production, makes high-quality fiction and documentary films, including 2021’s Misha and the Wolves and the multi-award-winning The Reason I Jump. MetFilm Production offers four graduate internships a year; lasting three months, and to date have employed more than 100 MetFilm School students and alumni on their films! Our students benefit from a regular and diverse range of Masterclasses from the very best in the industry, including among others: writer Sally Wainwright; actor Tim Roth; director and stars of Normal People, Lenny Abrahamson, Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar-Jones; actor Jonathan Pryce; writer Scott Z Burns; and award winning cinematographer Roger Deakins.

We’re one School, four studio-based campuses

We are now based in four studio-based campuses in three cities: two in London and in Berlin and Leeds. Our main London campus is based in Ealing Studios, the oldest working studio in Europe. In September 2021 we launched a new partnership with Garden Studios to launch our fourth studio campus where all our Full-Time Six Month courses will be delivered. Our Berlin campus is also located in a working film studio – BUFA Studios. Berlin is an energetic and exciting city, home to 3.5 million people from around the world and is one of the most inexpensive capital cities in Europe. If you choose to study the 2-year Practical Filmmaking course in London, you may have the opportunity to take your second year in Berlin. Speak to our Admissions team to find out more. And welcoming students in Autumn 2022 – our brand new Leeds campus based in Prime Studios, which plays host to professional film and television productions on an ongoing basis, and is next door to ITV Studios, the home of its flagship soap Emmerdale, one of whose current directors is MetFilm School tutor, Emma Lindley.
