Black Friday 2023: Why take a Short Course?

By Elise Czyzowska

22 November 2023

At MetFilm School, we offer a wide range of Short Courses at our London and Berlin campuses. Ranging from Twenty-Week Certificates to Two-Day Introductions, these courses cover a wide range of craft areas, from acting and filmmaking, to post production and creative editing – there truly is something for everyone.

From Monday 20 November until Thursday 30 November, we are offering a 20% Black Friday discount on all Short Courses available at our London campus*. Find out more here – or keep reading for our top reasons as to why you should take a Short Course!

Expand your Creative Network

At MetFilm School, we pride ourselves on being the place where industry meets education, and this includes access to a community of creatives. No matter how long it has been since they studied at the School, our graduates continue to talk about the network that they built here, and many continue to work with one another on both personal and professional projects long into their careers.

In this sense, a Short Course is a great way to meet people who share your interest in a specific craft. Shivani Desai, an actor and Business Mentor in the industry, spoke about the excitement of meeting new people during her time on Four-Week Acting for Film Level 1:

I was incredibly lucky to have found myself in the midst of like-minded creatives in my class. We were an eclectic bunch from different parts of the world – Bulgaria, Russia, Pakistan, India, Wales, Sweden, the US, Singapore…

Each of us brought a unique creative and cultural perspective to the table, and we all still stay in touch and support one another’s endeavours!

A Pathway to Further Studies

Considering a BA Degree in the screen industries – but hoping to get some experience of specific craft areas before sending in your application? A Short Course is a great way to test out a future career in the industries, offering much more flexibility than a university degree.

Not only this, but it can also help with the application process for a future degree, providing a tangible piece of experience to back up your passion and dedication to your craft. For those who may not have had the opportunity to study media or film at school – and with the UCAS Deadline fast approaching – this can be a particularly valuable resource.

The same goes for progression and upskilling before an MA Degree, as was the case with Giulia Gandini. Giulia began with a Two-Day Introduction course, before going on to study MA Directing at MetFilm School London. Now, Giulia is building a career within the industry, with her most recent credit being the BAFTA-winning BBC series Shetland, for which she directed three episodes of the latest season.

Upskill & Learn Something New

Finally, a Short Course is a chance to expand your horizons, to try something new or grow your existing skillset. It can be what makes you stand out on a job application, or the experience that sparks an entirely new career path.

Don’t just take our word for it – here’s what Communications Consultant Luca Stančič Kodarin had to say about her time on Four-Week Filmmaking over the summer:

At 38 years old, the most important lesson I’ve learned from this course is that you can ALWAYS completely change your life and career. Limiting yourself to other people’s opinions or ‘rules’ on how to live your life is something we all need to overcome.

Life can be whatever you want to be. If you want to try something new, whether you’re 18 or 68, go and try it!
