After completing her undergraduate degree and launching her own production company, Daisy Russell decided to embark on MetFilm School’s MA Screen and Film Production course in Manchester.
She’s currently juggling creative commissions, academic deadlines, and growing ‘Daisy Russell Productions’ – all while carving out her voice as both a producer and director.
We spoke to Daisy about what led her to the course, how she balances work and study, and why Manchester is the perfect city for emerging filmmakers.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and what you’ve been working on recently?
My name’s Daisy Russell. I originally graduated from Plymouth University with a foundation degree, then moved to Manchester to pursue my undergraduate degree at MetFilm School, and I had a really great experience.
I think what I learned there really helped develop me further and gave me the push I needed to launch my small production company. It kind of elevated everything. I wasn’t really ready to leave at the end of the course – I needed that year to properly settle into Manchester, and then all of a sudden the degree finished. I was a bit sad, to be honest, and a little underwhelmed because I’d just started to get into the cultural side of university life and being in the city.
That’s when I decided to apply for the MA – and I’m so glad I did. It’s been the perfect way to grow alongside my business.
What business is that?
I’ve got a small company called Daisy Russell Productions, and I mostly focus on short documentaries and music videos. That’s kind of my bread and butter. So I’ve tried to keep all my paid work connected to filming, so at least everything feeds into each other.
Right now, I’m producing a black and white biblical film called Jacob’s Fight. It’s written in biblical language, which has been a challenge in itself!
And what drew you specifically to producing?
I’ve always been into producing. I just love being involved in all the moving parts – bringing people together, organising shoots, solving problems on the go. It’s where I’m comfortable. But recently, through my music videos, I’ve started directing, too, and taking on more of the creative side, which I’ve really enjoyed. The MA has definitely helped bring that out of me more.
What does a typical week look like on the MA Producing course?
It’s really varied, to be honest. No week is the same. Sometimes I’m in pre-production meetings, sometimes I’m on set, sometimes I’m at my laptop budgeting or managing post-production. It depends on the phase of the project. But there’s always a good mix of theory, workshops, and hands-on production time.
Producing requires a mix of creative and logistical skills — how does the MA help you balance both sides?
Yeah, it’s definitely a juggle. The MA’s been good at encouraging us to find what we’re naturally strong at, but also to explore outside that. I’ve always been on the logistical side of things – schedules, call sheets, sorting crews – but as the course has progressed, I’ve felt more confident creatively. I’ve had space to try directing and step into that side of things without pressure, which has been really rewarding.
What advice would you give to someone considering the MA Producing course?
Be prepared to work. Like, really work. If you can link your work to your practice, it’ll all feed back into your development. Also, don’t be afraid to take creative risks while you’re here. The MA is the perfect time to try things out and figure out your voice.
I’m really glad I did it. The MA’s given me the time and space to grow both professionally and personally. I’ve come out with a clearer idea of who I am as a producer, and what I want my work to look like going forward.
