MetFilm School Leeds: Three years on

It has now been three years since MetFilm School Leeds welcomed its very first students through its doors in September 2022.

A year before that, MetFilm School officially announced the launch of its brand new campus at Prime Studios in Leeds. We kicked things off by hosting a launch party, attended by a mix of aspiring filmmakers, film and TV industry professionals and members of the local government and council, to hear first-hand the motivations for our arrival in the North of England and our aspirations for the years ahead.

We were honoured to also welcome the Mayor of West Yorkshire, former screenwriter and Coronation Street actor, Tracy Brabin. Speaking to the audience and our students at the event, she said: “These are really exciting times, and MetFilm School will be a part of that – that pipeline of talent is only going to help us. Welcome to the family!”

Fast forward to September 2023, and, we welcomed the very first cohort of BA and MA students to the new Prime Studios campus, who, along with some prestigious guests, joined us at the School for an opening celebration.

The celebration included canapés and drinks, tours of our new facilities, and some brilliant speeches from members of the MetFilm School community. The opening celebration was held in Prime Studios’ Archive Café, an on-site coffee house, bar, and event space, which we know our students will be making good use of over the months and years to come.

The students

Of the 200 guests at the event, almost half of the attendees were the very first MetFilm School Leeds students, having just finished their induction weeks. Throughout the opening celebration, students were able to network and meet like-minded creatives, from new friends across their cohort to industry professionals from Prime Studios, BFI, ScreenSkills, Screen Yorkshire, Leeds City Council, and ITV, amongst others.

The opportunity to meet so many of our industry friends and MetFilm School partners gives our students that extra boost towards finding their passions in the industry, enabling them to chat with people across different disciplines and roles, and to explore what they might want to aim for after their degree.

With three years of MA graduates already in the bag from the MA Cinematography, MA Directing, MA Screenwriting and MA Documentary and Factual courses, this year was especially exciting for Leeds as it saw its first graduates from the two BA courses: BA Acting for Screen and BA Content, Media & Film Production.
