Meet the Student Senate: Carmina Orozco Lopez, Green Officer (MA Documentary & Factual)

By Elise Czyzowska

14 April 2022

At MetFilm School, our Student Senate spans all three of our campuses, and today we’re sharing our interview with MetFilm School Berlin student Carmina Orozco Lopez, who is the Senate Green Officer.

Alongside her Senate responsibilities, Carmina is studying our MA Documentary & Factual, and in todays blog, she shared her motivation towards studying filmmaking, how her degree and her Senate position go hand in hand, and what film she would have loved to be a part of!

When did you decide you wanted to go into filmmaking?

I always loved movies and going to the cinema, it’s been a real constant my whole life. So, when I was about to finish high school, I decided that I wanted to give it a go as a creator and study audiovisual production.

I would say that at the beginning, it was quite hard because of my personal expectations, but it is all about practice, building confidence, and learning from your mistakes. That’s what allows you to grow as a filmmaker.

What were your early experiences of film?

For the majority of my childhood, my father worked at a movie theatre corporation, so I grew up going to the cinema at least once a week. It was a big part of my formative years, and something to look forward to during the week.

We watched all kinds of movies, and my taste in film has changed so much, but I would say nowadays I’m still always up for an international film and a new approach.

What brought you to study at MetFilm School?

After finishing my BA in filmmaking, I realised that I wanted to dig deeper into documentary filmmaking, so I started looking at programmes online, and that’s how I found MetFilm School! I was especially attracted by the hands-on approach and connections to the industry.

How are you finding the MA Documentary & Factual course?

I am truly enjoying the programme. Everyone in my class has a very diverse professional background, and it makes our discussions and collaborations quite rich. I’m glad that even through the rough times of the pandemic, we can still have in-person lessons and work on many of each other’s projects!

Why did you decide to run for Student Senate?

The idea of being a link between the students and the directives was very appealing to me as I wanted to be an active part of MetFilm School. I applied specifically for the Green Officer position because I’m personally very concerned about climate change, and I believe that it is up to every single one of us to change things and secure a better future.

Can you tell us a little about your position?

As the Green Officer, I attend meetings with the student representatives, as well as MetFilm School directives, where we discuss ways to improve student life, campuses, and curriculum. It’s a great way to interact with people from the London campus, and to share ideas on how to improve every student’s experience of MetFilm School.

How has the Senate changed your experience of your degree?

It’s changed my degree in a very positive way, in the sense that I am learning about what the MetFilm School team are constantly doing to be more sustainable as a school, and as filmmakers. I have learned that there are so many ways to reduce our carbon footprint as future filmmakers, and it has really changed my perspective of the power of cinema.

Finally… if you could have been a part of any film, past or present, which would you choose?

I would love to work with Guillermo del Toro, maybe in the making of The Shape of Water. I admire him as a director and as a person. Also being from Mexico, and seeing all that he has accomplished is very inspiring to me. He usually has a clear, creative vision, and is quite resourceful in his execution – so I’m sure I could learn so much from him!
