Since graduating from our MA Directing course at MetFilm School Leeds, Anindini Sen has wasted no time in putting her skills into practice. From exploring silent comedy in her graduation film Chips to landing a coveted place on the ScreenSkills HETV Assistant Director Traineeship, she’s embraced every opportunity to grow as a filmmaker.
We caught up with Anindini to hear about her journey so far – and how her time at MetFilm School helped her get to where she is today.
What did you learn from making Chips?
A lot! It gave me a real appreciation for how challenging silent comedy can be. But it also turned out to be one of the most rewarding creative experiences I’ve had.
I think the film reflects my instinct for comedy, but also tells a relatable story. I’m incredibly thankful to my crew – and especially to our lead actor – for helping bring my vision to life.
Looking back, what were some standout moments from your time on the MA Directing course?
One of the best parts was being able to experiment with different filmmaking approaches – from rehearsing with improv to testing out complex camera movements.
I also loved getting hands-on with professional equipment like dolly tracks. Learning how to use that kind of kit effectively really helped me add depth to my storytelling.
I’ll always remember the experience of collaborating with Centre of Screen Excellence: Yorkshire (CoSE:Y). That was a real highlight of the year.
Another key lesson was learning how to communicate with experienced actors. At first, that was intimidating, but over time, I grew in confidence and learned how to direct with clarity and respect.
What inspired you to apply for the ScreenSkills HETV Assistant Director Traineeship?
During the MA, we got to rotate through different roles on each other’s projects. I found myself really enjoying working as a 1st AD and Script Supervisor. It felt like a natural fit for me.
I realised that being an Assistant Director offers a unique perspective: you’re close to the director, but you also get to observe how every department works together. It’s a brilliant way to learn how a professional set operates.
When I saw that ScreenSkills were recruiting for their HETV trainee programme, I jumped at the chance. I knew how respected the scheme was, and I’m incredibly grateful to be one of this year’s selected trainees.
How has the traineeship built on what you learned during your MA?
So many of the core skills I developed at MetFilm School – time management, communication, multi-tasking, staying organised – are vital on a professional set.
The MA also gave me a deeper understanding of the entire filmmaking process, so I had a solid foundation going into the fast-paced environment of HETV production.
Leeds was recently voted one of the UK’s top five student cities. What makes it special to you?
It’s such an inclusive city, which meant a lot to me as an international student. And there’s a rich cultural energy here that makes it a fantastic place to study film.
The industry in the North is growing all the time, and that’s really inspiring for students. Plus, Leeds has a great global reputation as a creative city, so that definitely draws people in.
Any advice for meeting collaborators or networking in the industry?
When I first started MA Directing, networking felt quite nerve-wracking. But honestly, the only way to get comfortable with it is to keep showing up.
Listening to others can be really motivating, and sometimes, letting everyone else speak first can help you feel more at ease when it’s your turn to share.
At the heart of it, most people at these events are there because they love films. That shared passion is a great place to start.
