From campus to studio: Anna’s filmmaking journey at MetFilm School

30 October 2025

Meet Anna Piggot-Reeves – once a student on our BA (Hons) Filmmaking course at MetFilm School Birmingham, now making her mark behind the scenes of one of Britain’s favourite shows: The Great British Menu. Her story is a shining example of how hands-on learning, industry exposure, and creative courage can open doors in unexpected places.

Discovering her path

With a family background in scriptwriting, Anna felt drawn to storytelling, but it was at MetFilm School where that spark became a reality. She discovered that our BA in Filmmaking isn’t just about theory, but also about doing – which suited Anna’s energy, curiosity, and ambition perfectly.

From student to crew: on-set realities

Anna’s time at MetFilm School gave her the chance to try a bit of everything. Directing, producing, camera, editing. That broad experience proved invaluable. When she made the leap to become a runner on The Great British Menu, she found that what she learned at MetFilm School translated directly to the studio floor. Whether coordinating crew, managing time-critical tasks, or assisting in fast-moving production moments, Anna could call on what she learned in class and on student productions.

Why BA (Hons) Filmmaking works

  • Practical & theoretical: At MetFilm School we believe filmmakers should make films. Anna highlights that balance as key: one moment in class, the next behind a camera.
  • Multidisciplinary exposure: Anna entered wanting to direct but discovered a passion for producing – a journey encouraged by our ‘try many roles’ ethos.
  • Career-ready: By the time she graduated, Anna was ready to step into set roles, and now she’s already accumulating credits and experience in high-level production.

Student life that builds confidence

Life as a filmmaking student at MetFilm School was never dull for Anna. She found herself part of a community where everyone was making things: sharing crews, helping each other on shoots, swapping stories and gear. The collaborative environment built not only her technical skills, but her confidence. Because whether you’re filming a student short or working on a major TV show, the attitude is the same: be ready, stay curious, embrace the challenge.

Advice for aspiring filmmakers

Anna says to new students: just make films. Use your phone, use your mates, use your ideas. Build a show-reel. Be proactive. And when you get to university, don’t stick to one role – try directing, producing, camera… finding your place often comes through doing. Her own advice was shaped by what she learned at MetFilm School and what she’s now living in the television industry.
