When you step into a cinema or stream your favourite series, you’re stepping into a world carefully built by production designers. Artists, problem-solvers, and storytellers who shape everything you see on screen. As demand for high-quality film and television content surges globally, so does the need for talented designers who can bring these worlds to life.
MetFilm School’s BA (Hons) Production Design for Screen & Film is designed to meet that need. This course serves as your gateway to one of the most creative, collaborative, and technically exciting fields in the industry.
What makes this degree different?
The film and TV landscape is evolving rapidly, and so is the demand for production designers with solid technical ability, creative vision, and genuine on-set experience. This degree has been carefully crafted in collaboration with industry professionals to ensure that students graduate with the exact skills required.
Crucially, the course embeds production design within a working film school environment. That means you’re not learning in isolation; you’re learning alongside directors, producers, cinematographers, and editors. This collaboration mirrors real industry practice and helps you understand not only how to design for screen, but how to thrive as part of a wider production team.
Practical learning from day one
This isn’t a course where you sit back and watch. Each year includes a combination of speculative projects and live film productions, with collaborations across multiple departments – from BA Filmmaking and BA Film Business & Production to BA Hair and Make-Up for Screen & Film
You’ll develop skills across:
- Model making
- Set decoration
- Digital design
- Costume design
- Propmaking
- Concept development
All of this takes place in purpose-built design studios, giving you the space and tools to refine your craft and build an industry-ready portfolio.
A comprehensive understanding of production design
Working inside a dedicated film school means you see the entire filmmaking process up close. You’ll learn how your designs support storytelling, how to collaborate with directors and cinematographers, and how to translate ideas from script to screen.
By the end of the course, you won’t just be able to design a set –you’ll understand how to design for production.
Industry-facing teaching and opportunities
Your lecturers are experienced production designers, art directors, and industry specialists who bring real-world insight directly into the classroom. Guest speakers, masterclasses, and industry events keep the learning fresh, relevant, and connected to what’s happening across film, TV, and streaming.
You’ll also have access to a work placement between years 2 and 3, supported by MetFilm School’s career and industry teams – giving you a head start as you move toward professional work.
Real projects, real experience
Throughout your degree, you’ll work on live productions – including graduate films that will be screened at the end of the course. These projects offer more than just experience; they’re opportunities to collaborate with peers, solve real production challenges, and add professional credits to your portfolio.
Alongside this, you’ll begin to build a network of filmmakers who will grow with you, often becoming collaborators long after graduation.
