Module Overview

Module Overview

First year projects cover a broad range of fundamental design skills including set design for studio and location, model making, drafting, costume design, graphic prop making, digital design, set decoration, set builds and on set work. By introducing you to wide-ranging skills and art department roles in Year one, this enables you to make informed decisions about your individual interests and strengths which you will develop and refine as you progress through the course. Year one projects are a balance of personal design work and cross-course collaborations on live films shoots.

Moving into your second year, your knowledge will deepen, and you will be encouraged to become more exploratory as your skills and confidence grow. The introduction of Option Modules such as Prop and Modelmaking and Digital Design & Concept enables you to tailor the course to your personal interests and strengths. As with the first year, projects are a balance of personal studio-based design work and cross-course collaborations on live films shoots. In the summer break between Level 5 and 6 you are encouraged to apply for work placements which are managed by our Creative Futures team.

During your three years you will have explored a broad range of art department roles and skills and will be ready, by Level 6, to focus on specialised role or roles of your choice. The third year is steered by you, and your focus might be production design or art direction, film graphic design, prop design or prop makes. In this final year you will undertake a personal project of your choice, alongside design work on live film shoots for a Graduate Film.  The course is designed to prepare you for the workplace and by the end of Year three you will have a strong portfolio of work with which you can proceed into the Industry. The course culminates in Graduate Film screenings at the Duke of York’s cinema alongside a final Graduate Exhibition where you publicly display your work, offering valuable exposure to industry professionals.
