The 12-Week Part-Time Foundation in Filmmaking is a practical evening course designed for people looking to build core filmmaking skills while balancing work or other commitments. You will explore visual storytelling, directing, screenwriting, production, editing and the fundamentals of camera, lighting and sound across weekly workshops and hands-on exercises.

This course is ideal for newcomers to filmmaking as well as those with early-stage experience who want structured, practical training.

Across twelve weeks, you will:

What you will study

What you will study

Students explore the following key areas of study during the 12 Week Part-Time Foundation in Filmmaking Course:

Students will learn how to tell stories through the use of visual mediums. Students will look at composition, framing, blocking and camera positions and how to engage an audience. Working with images, students will learn how to create a memorable and engaging story.

Students will learn how to find, pitch and develop ideas. Students will develop a scene, learn the importance of re-writing and develop a short narrative scene for their final project. Students will learn the correct format and presentation of scripts.

Students will learn about the role of the Director, how to communicate with actors and the key collaborative relationships which are at the core of filmmaking. Students will look at creative approaches to producing effective screen content.

Students will be introduced to the craft of editing and will understand the importance of shooting for the edit

Students will learn the basics of camera, lighting and sound to enable the successful production of short narrative films and explore the impact of creative decisions in image and sound on storytelling.

Students will collaborate across their cohort to prep, shoot and edit a short, filmed exercise. Students are expected to support filming in a variety of crew roles to solidify their learning journey.

Entry Requirements

Minimum Age: 18 at the start of the course.

This course is open enrolment and there are no entry requirements.

In order to get the most out of the course, you should be able to both speak and write in English to a reasonable standard.

Please be aware that we have a limited number of places available for each course intake and operate on a first-come, first-served basis.

  • Duration: 12-weeks, Part-Time, Tuesdays 7-10pm.
  • Location: MetFilm School Campus at Ealing Studios.
