What You Will Study

What You Will Study

Over three trimesters you will gain advanced insight into the craft of a director and the implications of creating and delivering screen content to a wide variety of audiences and contexts.

Trimester One focuses on the essence of screen storytelling and the role the director plays in realisation of stories through the creation of a short film and developing of pitching skills. Alongside this you will explore your own qualities as you build a career profile that will develop as the course – and your understanding – increases.

In Trimester Two, you will enrich your understanding through a client-facing directing assignment and explore the role of the television director. In addition, you will develop the research and analytical skills expected in both your academic and professional practice.

In Trimester Three, you will draw together your practical, theoretical, and industry understanding into the creation and delivery of a filmed artefact and complete your career plan as part of your progression into real world employment.

Module Overview

Module Overview

The overview below is not a complete list of MA Directing modules.

You will learn what it takes to be a director in today’s industry by focusing on story development and collaborating with creative teams. Alongside creating screen content, you will study how the industry and audiences connect, ultimately preparing you to pitch a feature film or TV project to an industry panel.

You will focus on the practical challenges of creating a self-contained, narrative piece. You will cover a range of skills appropriate to the role of the director, including project planning, rehearsing and shooting with actors, visualising the story and on-set protocols. In addition, you will look at creative troubleshooting and working in a collaborative environment.

You will explore how film and television work by looking at the relationship between genre, audience, and the industry. By studying how audiences engage with screen content both globally and at home, you will learn how to apply these insights to your own creative projects. This module encourages you to dive into the history and future of the screen industries, helping you understand the purpose of your work and how to use genre to tell more impactful stories.

Working with production teams drawn from the other pathways, you will work as a director and in other roles on videos for external clients. You will develop ideas, engage in appropriate preparatory work and direction, alongside gaining insight into a range of production roles and responsibilities.

You will understand the hierarchical relationships between director, writer, and producer in the creation and delivery of serialised narrative content. You will learn to work to a house style alongside initiating a series ‘look’ or vision.

You will identify your place in the industry and build a professional portfolio of materials to use immediately upon graduation. By learning core entrepreneurial skills alongside specialist knowledge for your specific pathway, you will develop the tools needed for a long-term career. You will also pitch your Final Major Project, showing how your creative vision aligns with your professional goals.

You will focus on the preparation and planning of your Final Major Project, applying your specialist skills to bring your ideas to life. This module is largely self-directed, giving you the space to explore your creative identity and reflect on your growth as a practitioner. Supported by a project supervisor, you will produce industry-standard prep work that demonstrates your expertise in your chosen role.

This final collaboration is your opportunity to work independently and create a signature piece of work that showcases your development as a director. You will deliver a distinctive, research-based, and industry-facing project that reflects an awareness of our diverse and inclusive world. Alongside the production, you will refine your career plan, ensuring you are fully prepared to enter the screen industries.
