Why Study Film & TV in Manchester

Why Study Film & TV in Manchester

As a MetFilm School student in Manchester, you’ll be immersed in this thriving creative environment. You’ll study in close proximity to active productions and industry professionals, giving you direct insight into how the screen industries operate and helping you build valuable connections while you learn.

  • Part of a Creative Campus – MetFilm School Manchester is part of the BIMM Manchester campus alongside BIMM Music Institute, Performers College and Northern Ballet School — a set-up which means there is plenty of opportunity for students to collaborate on creative projects across the city.
  • St John’s and Enterprise City – MetFilm School Manchester is located in the St John’s neighbourhood, part of Enterprise City — a major new hub for tech, media, and creativity in the city centre. The area is rapidly establishing itself as Manchester’s dedicated media and film quarter.
  • Next Door to Aviva Studios – Our campus sits alongside Aviva Studios, the iconic home of Factory International and the largest new cultural venue in the UK since Tate Modern. Aviva Studios hosts a year-round programme of productions, screenings, and immersive events — and in collaboration with the school, our students are welcome to use the space for coursework or simply to spend time in one of the city’s most exciting cultural venues.
  • Surrounded by Industry – Just a short walk away are Versa Manchester Studios, the city’s largest central TV and film studio complex, situated on the historic former Granada site. Nearby, the ABC Buildings — three repurposed 1960s blocks — are home to a growing cluster of film, TV, media, and tech companies.
  • At the Centre of a Screen Hub – Campfield Yard connects Aviva Studios to the wider Enterprise City campus, bringing together studios, production companies, and digital innovators in one place. This development is expected to support around 15,000 tech and media workers, putting MetFilm students at the heart of one of the UK’s most vibrant screen industries — with real opportunities for networking, live projects, and careers.
  • Manchester’s Film and TV Industry – There are three main areas of Manchester where film production happens: in the east of the city at Space Studios and The Sharp Project; in the city centre, where indie companies cluster between the Northern Quarter and Spinningfields; and in the west, the renowned MediaCity.
  • Space Studios and The Sharp Project – Built in virtually the same location as the iconic Mancunian show Shameless, Space Studios is home to the largest sound stage in Europe, on a par with the Bond stage at Pinewood. Recent productions include the sixth series of Peaky Blinders and Sky Original’s Intergalactic. The Sharp Project’s central campus houses companies such as Brown Bag and Brickhouse, and is the birthplace of Sky TV’s hit series Brassic.
  • City Centre – Manchester’s city centre is home to a wide range of commercial and indie film companies — from production houses creating high-end commercials and premier football content, to the UK’s biggest regional post-production house, and indie film companies making feature films released on Netflix. Exciting new developments include St John’s (formerly Granada), which features Enterprise City alongside The Factory, a new hub for arts and culture. This, and the expansive N.O.M.A. district, are transforming Manchester into a dynamic centre for the creative industries.
  • MediaCity – MediaCity is predominantly home to large-scale studio productions from CBBC, BBC Sport, and ITV Studios. The independent drama production company RED is also based here, alongside other broadcasters specialising in factual TV.
  • A City Like No Other – Manchester is a city with a buzz of excitement around every corner. Its most famous exports include Oscar-winning film director Danny Boyle, iconic bands like The Smiths, Oasis, and Pale Waves, and the globally celebrated football teams who play in red and blue. Historical figures from Manchester include suffragette leader Emmeline Pankhurst, presenter Professor Brian Cox, and philosopher Friedrich Engels.
  • Manchester Pride – The Mardi Gras Festival — now known as Manchester Pride — started in 1985 as a fundraiser for people with AIDS. It grew through the 90s into a unifying community event and a national symbol of change and inclusivity.
  • Culture, Art, and History – Manchester’s rich array of museums, theatres, and galleries means there’s always something to take in. Gamers should visit Power UP, a permanent exhibition at the Science & Industry Museum, dedicated to classic and locally developed video games.
  • Green Spaces in the City – There are plenty of open spaces and green areas to take a break and get some fresh air. Piccadilly Gardens is a great spot to spend time between lectures, and a little further south — just off Canal Street — you’ll find Sackville Park, home to the Alan Turing memorial statue.
  • Beyond the City Centre – If you enjoy being out in nature, Manchester has plenty on offer. The surrounding areas are home to a range of green spaces worth exploring, including Heaton Park, Alexandra Park, and many more.
