Why film school? What you get beyond a degree

If you’re thinking about applying for MetFilm School this year and you’re drawn to the world of storytelling, cameras, editing suites, or production sets, you’ve probably asked yourself one big question:
“Do I really need to go to film school?”
We get it. Film is a practical industry. Some of the biggest names out there didn’t take the traditional university route. So why bother with film school? What does it really give you – beyond a degree certificate?
Spoiler: a lot more than you think.
Here’s what you get when you join a film school, and why it’s about much more than lectures and textbooks.
1. Creative confidence (AKA permission to go for it)
At MetFilm School, you’ll write, shoot, direct, edit, and collaborate on projects from day one. That kind of consistent, hands-on experience builds the confidence you need to put yourself out there.
Got a weird sci-fi idea involving sentient avocados and time travel? Let’s make it. Want to direct your first short film? Write the script.
Here, no one’s rolling their eyes at your big dreams, we’re just rolling the cameras.
2. A professional network before you graduate
The screen industries thrive on collaboration, and networking is everything. At MetFilm School, you’re working with future producers, directors, writers, cinematographers, and editors every day. You’re also learning from lecturers who are active in the industry, meaning your work is seen and shaped by people who do this for real.
You might find your future writing partner, DOP, or production designer in your very first workshop. That crew you pulled together for your second-year film? They might just be the team you bring on to your first feature. (It’s happened!)
At one of our recent masterclasses, Finn Cole (Peaky Blinders, Last Breath) spoke about the power of industry connections, telling our students:
“Start working with other cool people – people who inspire you. Your friends. People who are as excited and passionate as you are are usually going to go somewhere too.”
Speaking of masterclasses, we feature renowned professionals like Roger Deakins, Bryan Cranston, and Chloé Zhao for our students. These sessions cover various crafts – directing, editing, producing – offering insider insights into film, television, and screen acting.
3. A safe space to fail (and then nail it)
Here’s the truth no one tells you: failing is part of the process. A shoot will go sideways. A script won’t land. An edit might feel like it’s held together with duct tape and hope, but that’s the point.
MetFilm School gives you a safe space to experiment, try new things, make mistakes and learn from every single one. It’s far better to figure that stuff out now, in an environment that supports your growth, than on a high-pressure professional set, though you will get there.
4. Access to kit, studios, and skills you won’t get at home
Sure, you can shoot on your phone these days – and we encourage that too – but MetFilm School gives you access to professional-grade equipment, studios, post-production suites, and technical training to match.
You’ll be taught how to use industry-standard kit by industry professionals. By the time you graduate, you’ll be able to walk onto a working set and actually know what’s going on – and how you fit into it all.
5. A degree that means something
Yes, we said this is about more than a degree, but let’s be real: that degree still matters. It’s a stamp of quality, a sign of commitment, and for many roles in film, TV, and the screen industries, it opens doors that might otherwise be locked.
At the end of the degree, you’ll graduate with a portfolio full of work you can instantly show to employers, collaborators, and clients – not just ideas, but finished projects that prove what you can actually do. From short films and scripts to pitch decks and production experience, you’ll leave with tangible evidence of your skills, your voice, and your readiness to step straight into the industry.
All MetFilm School campuses have their own working film studios (think Ealing Studios in London, think Prime Studios in Leeds, think Rea Studios in Birmingham). That means your degree is rooted in what the real world actually needs and values.
So… why film school?
Because it’s not just a course. It’s a launchpad. It’s a few years of pushing your creative limits, building your crew, testing your ideas, and learning how the industry really works from the inside out.
If your heart beats faster when you walk past a cinema, or you can’t stop seeing shots in everyday life, or you know you’ve got stories to tell but need the tools to tell them, then film school might just be the best decision you make.
