How our students connect with practical filmmakers

By MetFilm School

28 July 2025

If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to learn filmmaking not just in theory – but directly alongside the people who live and breathe it every day – then you’re not alone. At MetFilm School, that connection to the real world of film and television isn’t a bonus feature; it’s the foundation of what we do.

From day one, we want our students to experience what it really means to be a filmmaker today.

Here’s how we make that happen…

Guest speakers who have been there, done that

Our guest speaker programme is one of the most anticipated parts of student life. From BAFTA-winning producers and festival-circuit indie directors, to emerging talents fresh off their first Netflix series, we invite industry professionals with stories to tell and lessons to share.

These aren’t just one-off lectures. They’re honest, behind-the-scenes conversations where students can ask questions, hear about challenges, and get a real sense of what it takes to succeed in today’s industry.

Recent highlights? Guests like Oscar-nominated Brian Cranston (Breaking Bad, Malcolm in the Middle), the legendary actress Lesley Manville (All or Nothing, The Crown) and actor and director Tim Roth (Pulp Fiction, The Hateful Eight, Reservoir Dogs) – each sharing personal insights that you simply can’t find in a textbook.

Industry projects that are more than just assignments

At MetFilm School, you learn by doing.

Our students often find themselves working on live briefs, collaborating with real clients, or pitching ideas that could actually get made. Whether it’s a branded content piece, a short film for a non-profit, or a documentary idea that catches the eye of a production company, these projects provide invaluable experience – and often, a foot in the door.

We’ve even seen projects that started in the classroom end up on festival circuits or picked up for distribution. It’s proof that when students are given real opportunities, incredible things can happen.

Internships, networking & the power of location

Let’s talk access.

Our campuses in London (based at the legendary Ealing Studios), Leeds (Prime Studios), Berlin (Molecule Studios), Brighton (Brighton Film Studios), Manchester (Riverside Studios) and Birmingham (REA Studios) put students right in the heart of creative communities. Being here opens doors to internships, production sets, networking events, and spontaneous coffee chats with industry pros.

We actively support students in finding placements and freelance gigs during their studies, helping them build CVs, reels, and reputations before graduation.

A community that stays connected

Finally, it’s not just about the big names. It’s about the people sitting next to you in class.

MetFilm School students become part of a community of future directors, producers, editors, and creatives. Through collaboration, feedback, and shared passion, they start to form the network that will carry them throughout their careers.

Our alumni often return as guest speakers, collaborators, and even employers. That sense of connection across cohorts, campuses, and countries is one of the most valuable assets we offer.
