Filmmaking student Katie Wyles finding inspiration at Sheffield DocFest

For BA Practical Filmmaking student Katie Wyles, a few hours at Sheffield DocFest 2025 turned into a defining moment in her creative journey.
Thanks to a delegate pass arranged by the MetFilm School Leeds Creative Futures team, Katie was able to attend the internationally renowned documentary festival, even if only for part of Sunday’s schedule. What she hadn’t anticipated was how impactful this short visit would be.
“I absolutely loved every minute of it. It really did prove beneficial – so thank you so much for that opportunity!” she shared in a message to Careers Manager Kerrie Marsh.
Katie also made meaningful connections with creatives from the local area. Over lunch, she met students from Westminster University, and together they shared thoughts on graduation, the transition into HETV, and what lies ahead for new entrants to the industry.
“We exchanged stories and details to stay in touch,” she said. “It was so nice getting to hear from other graduates in the same position with similar aspirations.”
Katie’s story is a powerful reminder of the value these opportunities hold for early-career filmmakers. Even a few hours at a festival can open doors, spark collaborations, and reshape career plans.
“I just wanted to acknowledge how beneficial the pass was, even for the few hours I was able to use it for!” she said.
We’re thrilled to see our Leeds students embracing these moments, and we look forward to seeing what’s next for Katie as she continues to immerse herself in the industry.
