The film year is littered with festivals and awards all over the world, with so many opportunities for filmmakers to celebrate – and get recognition for – their craft. This time of year is particularly busy, with the BAFTAs, Oscars, Golden Globes, and many others, hitting our screens and social feeds. This makes it a perfect time to celebrate MetFilm School graduates and the impact they are having across the industry!
Across this year’s BAFTAs, Oscars, and Golden Globes, we have 99 graduate credits in production teams, camera, art departments, visual effects, and post-production. Of course, these 99 credits provide just a small insight into what our graduates are doing in the industry right now.
These six highlights from February demonstrate the incredible contributions from 28 MetFilm School students and graduates to the world of film:
- The Rachel Incident, a new Channel 4 / Universal eight-part series, started shooting in Ireland, co-directed by two MetFilm School graduates, Giulia Gandini and Megan K Fox. Read the Channel 4 announcement here.
- MetFilm School graduate Assaf Machnes’s first feature film, Where To?, premiered at the Berlinale, garnering a wonderful response. Check out this brilliant review in Screen.
- MetFilm School graduate Ed Paroldi was appointed as Director of Sales at top UK film sales agent, HanWay Films. The organisation’s president, Peter Watson, said of the appointment: “we’re extremely lucky to be able to work with such talented young executives … whose diverse tastes and rich experiences will both embolden and challenge our company towards the vanguard of contemporary cinema” – see Screen article here.
- The Royal Television Society (RTS) announced its nominations for their upcoming North West and Midlands Student Awards. The work of 15 students and graduates was amongst these nominations – for the films Baby Teef, Space Space, Once Upon A Time in the North West, and The Goldman.
- Graduate Rodrigo Malnati screened his graduation project, Overdue, at the London Film Club, winning Best Debut Film and Best Animation.
- The film Gale premiered in London’s Leicester Square in advance of its US theatrical release. It was written and directed by MetFilm School lecturers Matthew Ford and Daniel Alexander respectively, with eight students playing key creative and technical roles. Read here about how the film showcases the education-industry blend that makes MetFilm School so unique.
Circling back to the BAFTAs, read here about graduate Max Mir’s experience working as one of three credited MetFilm School graduates on this year’s Outstanding British Film, Hamnet.
In the spirit of celebrating cinema, let’s finish with the 38th European Film Awards, held this year in Berlin. This star-studded event was curated by Artistic Director, Robert Lehniger, MetFilm School-Berlin’s Head of School. It’s worth reading these highlights of a ceremony built around the simple, essential question of what makes us all love cinema.
