Overview
The MA Music for Film, Media and Games develops the craft and workflow of screen composition and sound design for film, television, games and digital platforms. Designed with input from working professionals, it combines studio practice with critical reflection so you can deliver to brief, collaborate effectively and meet industry expectations.
You will compose narrative-led music, design sound, and build skills in synchronisation, licensing and interactive audio for games. The course also examines current tools and the practical use of AI where it adds value to modern pipelines.
You will have access to specialist facilities and cross-disciplinary projects in partnership with BIMM Music Institute and MetStudios, gaining experience that reflects real production environments. Industry mentoring and live briefs support the development of a professional network and a portfolio that shows range and reliability.
The course suits early-career composers and sound designers, music graduates seeking to specialise, and practitioners upskilling for screen work. By graduation, you will have a coherent body of work and the tools to pursue roles in film scoring, game audio and media composition.

Module Overview
Module Overview
Our 12-month master’s course is divided into a winter, spring and summer trimester, each with a different focus. For part-time students, only one module is completed per trimester.

Practice Research & Analysis
This module will take you through the culture of film, media and games. You’ll explore how you might position your practice within the various strands of music creation to picture, as you develop your major project proposal.
You’ll engage in critical thinking as you conduct your ethical research looking at differences between artistic and mainstream film scoring, and the analysis of music in film, media and games.
Sound Design, Composition & Key Technologies
This module provides a critical and historical overview of music and sound in relation to the moving image.
You’ll develop practical skills in the use of the digital audio workstation (DAW), samples and plug-ins. Video integration necessary for modern scoring and post-production awareness will be explored, as well as foley, sound effects, and contemporary developments including the role of artificial intelligence.
You will contrast and compare aspects of sound design as an art form, and ambient composition.
Composition, Arrangement & Orchestration
This module explores a range of compositional and production techniques relevant to contemporary media contexts. You’ll engage with stylistic conventions in classical and jazz composition, within the use of current technology as covered in Sound Design, Composition & Key Technologies.
You’ll critically reflect on artistic choices between theoretical understanding and intuitive, ear-based approaches to writing music. Key technical concepts will include the frequency spectrum, spatial depth, panning, and 5.1 surround sound, together with arranging for electronic music, strings, brass and woodwind.
You’ll apply electronic and acoustic textures in writing to picture, while considering emerging applications of artificial intelligence in composition and audio production.
Negotiated Professional & Technical Development
Your study here will focus on how you approach the contemporary landscape of the film, television, and games industries. You’ll investigate the functions of library and production music, alongside the technical vocabulary, specifications, and workflows that underpin professional sound post-production.
You’ll gain insight into industry roles, scheduling, and collaborative practices in preparation for real-world production environments.
You’ll consider the emerging impact of artificial intelligence on creative practice and the future of media composition.
Major Project
This module gives you the opportunity to produce an extended piece of work that explores your chosen area(s) of practice.
Through applying the knowledge and skills gained through the previous four modules, you are empowered to work at the forefront of your chosen context, adding to the growing field of practice-informed research on music for film, media and games.

Minimum Requirements
- A good degree (normally 2.2 or above) or significant professional experience in the creative arts/industries.
- Overseas students for whom English is not their native language may be required to meet a minimum English language requirement of an Academic IELTS 6.5. We require a minimum of 6.0 to be achieved in each band.
- All applicants will be subject to interview and a portfolio may also be requested for Recognition of Prior Certified or Experiential Learning (RPCEL).
