The BBC’s Dreaming Whilst Black has returned for its highly anticipated second series and it’s already receiving widespread acclaim. The hit comedy-drama, which dives into the challenges and triumphs of navigating the creative industries as a young Black filmmaker, has just earned a glowing five-star review from The Guardian.
For us at MetFilm School, this success feels especially close to home. The series was created by, written by, acted in, and shot by our very own graduates — including its creator and star, Adjani Salmon, who completed his MA Directing with us.
From student vision to screen success
Adjani first developed Dreaming Whilst Black as a web series, inspired by his own journey trying to break into the film and TV industry. With a mix of honesty, sharp humour, and a distinctive storytelling voice, he created something that resonated deeply with both audiences and industry peers.
After the web series gained momentum online, the BBC picked it up — leading to a widely praised first series in 2023 and now a triumphant second season that has firmly established the show as one of the UK’s standout comedies in recent years.
MetFilm School collaboration
Behind the camera, Dreaming Whilst Black represents the power of collaboration and community. Many of the show’s original key crew members are MetFilm School graduates, contributing to the project across cinematography, production, and other creative roles.
The connection came full circle in 2023, when creator and alumnus Adjani Salmon returned to MetFilm School to deliver a masterclass, sharing insights from the show’s journey and creative process. It’s a fantastic example of what can happen when our alumni come together — talented storytellers who are ready to take their place in the industry and make work that connects with audiences on every level.
Authentic voices, real impact
Series two continues to blend laugh-out-loud comedy with thought-provoking social commentary, tackling themes of ambition, identity, and the realities of working in today’s creative industries. Critics have celebrated the show’s authenticity, emotional honesty, and sharp writing — proof that meaningful storytelling can be both entertaining and insightful.
As The Guardian put it in their five-star review, Dreaming Whilst Black is not just funny — it’s fresh, heartfelt, and essential viewing for anyone passionate about storytelling.
Inspiring the next generation
Adjani’s journey is a brilliant reminder that big opportunities often start with small beginnings — a camera, an idea, and the determination to tell your story. His path shows what’s possible when creativity meets persistence and when filmmakers take charge of their own narratives.
For us, his success reflects what we aim to do every day at MetFilm School: support authentic, ambitious voices and help them find their place in the global screen industry.
With Dreaming Whilst Black continuing to spark conversations and capture audiences, we’re incredibly proud to celebrate Adjani and the many MetFilm School graduates who helped bring the series to life.
Their achievements remind us why we do what we do — empowering storytellers to make work that matters.
Congratulations to Adjani and the entire Dreaming Whilst Black team — shining proof that the next generation of screen talent is already shaping the future of British television.
