MA Documentary and Factual graduate Ifeatu Nnaobi creates uplifting documentary

By MetFilm School

08 May 2025

At MetFilm School Berlin, our MA Documentary and Factual students are encouraged to tell bold and authentic stories that challenge dominant narratives – and recent graduate Ifeatu Nnaobi’s work is a powerful example of that.

Ifeatu directed A Portrait of Muhammed, a powerful and compassionate short film that follows Muhammed, an asylum seeker from The Gambia who has carved out a meaningful life for himself in Berlin. Despite the challenges facing African migrants in Europe, Muhammed’s story is one of hope, resilience, and joy.

The film captures Muhammed as a multifaceted individual: an activist, a musician, a community leader, and even a skateboarder. We see him laughing and living, all while dedicating himself to the fight for migrant rights in Kreuzberg, Berlin.

Through his work as a social worker and co-founder of We Are Born Free Empowerment Radio — one of the first African-run radio stations in Europe — Muhammed supports other migrants in finding their voice and their place in society. The station, located just minutes from the infamous Görlitzer Park, serves as a beacon of empowerment and solidarity for marginalised communities.

A Portrait of Muhammed is a beautiful short film and serves as a reminder that storytelling can be a form of activism.
