Information for Care Leavers/Care Experienced Students
Definition
The University defines a Care Experienced student as an individual who has spent at least 13 weeks in local authority care prior to the start of their course. This could include living with foster parents, living at home with parents/guardians under the supervision of social services, living in a residential children’s home, or living in another residential setting like a school or secure unit.
Care experienced: you have been looked after for at least 3 months at any point in your childhood. This care may have been provided in many different settings, as mentioned above.
Care Leaver: this means that you are aged 16-25 and have been in the care of your local authority for at least 13 weeks at any time since the age of 14, including some time after your 16th birthday.
BIMM University Supporting Care-Experienced Students to thrive
We recognise that students who have spent time in care often face barriers that go beyond their academic journeys. Many experience disrupted education, limited financial support and reduced family networks, and may find the transition to university life uniquely challenging.
BIMM is committed to promoting equal opportunities for all applicants and students. We aim to make sure that every student, whatever their background, has a fulfilling education experience that enriches their lives and careers. Our Care Leaver Offer reflects national guidance emphasising the need for higher education providers to ‘fill the gap’ in support and set out clearly what they can offer care leavers.
BIMM is a registered member of NNECL, and as signatories to the Care Leaver Covenant, we commit to providing support that promotes wellbeing, independence and the best possible student outcomes. [gov.uk]
