MetFilm School welcomes first guests to Leeds campus

By Danny Kelly

22 October 2021

MetFilm School was proud to welcome today the first guests to our new Leeds campus at Prime Studios.

A mix of aspiring filmmakers and film & TV industry professionals were in attendance at the Open Day and lunchtime Launch Party, hearing first-hand the motivations for our arrival in the North of England and our aspirations for the years ahead.

Throughout the celebratory day, in one of our largest studio workspaces, a crew of BA & MA students have also been busy demonstrating their skills through a shooting exercise, as well as speaking enthusiastically about what inspired them to go to film school, developing their craft through study, and the joys of collaboration.

Tracy Brabin, former screenwriter and Coronation Street actor and Mayor of West Yorkshire – seen with our students above – was one of the many guests who visited the new campus today. Speaking to the audience, she said: “These are really exciting times and MetFilm School will be a part of that – and that pipeline of talent is only going to help us.

“As a region we are a brain gain region, which often isn’t the situation for university cities – they’re often a brain drain. So we get people who haven’t come to university here but actually move here because of the quality of life, and set up their businesses here.

“I was at the Global Investment Summit only a couple of days ago talking to people selling the cultural offer, as it is also about the quality of life – people come here and train here and they stay here. Because actually the quality of life is great and not just our glorious countryside, but it is the bars, the clubs and the culture on offer; the city spaces; the park runs and the lifestyle; all of which I am certainly investing in to make sure we keep those creatives here.

“I met the director Shane Meadows (This Is England) who is shooting up here, and I asked him where his crew was from, and he said all of them… all of them are from the north. So, it makes so much sense: we have the locations, we have the beauty, we have the will and the open arms to bring people here, and we have to make sure we have the talent and the crew as well.

“It’s such an exciting time that Channel 4 has been pivotal to, so we are going to make sure that we keep them. Welcome to the family!”

MetFilm School has undertaken to invest over £6m over five years to bring a new campus to the north based in Yorkshire – Leeds. Within three years we aim to have more than 200 students, at maturity enrolling approximately 100 students per year.

From Autumn 2022, we will be offering the following undergraduate and masters’ degrees:
