MetFilm School Alumni Tara Shehata’s (MA Directing) film The Shadow of Cairo was shortlisted for the Jury Award: Best Live Action Short, at the 2019 Oscar-qualifying New York International Children’s Film Festival (NYICFF).

The panel for this year’s NYICFF consisted of huge Hollywood names including; Sofia Coppola, Kyle Maclachlan and Uma Thurman.

“It was surreal to learn that Sofia Coppola, Taika Waititi, Uma Thurman and Zoe Saldana amongst many other great filmmakers and industry professionals watched and liked our film.”

The Shadow of Cairo tells the story of Maia (Yasmina El-Abd), who following her mother’s death, becomes a superhero fighting crime on the streets of the Egyptian capital. The film was also nominated in the Creative Excellence category at the 2018 MetFilm School Smart Screen Creative Awards – the School’s annual awards ceremony, celebrating the ingenuity, passion and talent of graduates and students.

A number of MetFilm School Alumni played major roles in the team behind this project, including Producer Eliana Neustadt (MA Producing), DOP Matteo Bangrazi (MA Cinematography) and Colourist Maria Brandt (MA Post Production).

“Our team had a great time at the Oscar-qualifying NYICFF. We were honoured to have been asked to do Q&As, with large audiences after the screenings, and were thrilled to learn that The Shadow of Cairo was picked by The Jury as one of three finalists!”
