Emmy-nominated writer, director and producer and MA Film & TV Production course leader, Justin Trefgarne, has written and developed the new YouTube Original animated series Sherwood.

The show is a 10-part YouTube Original which adapts the legend of Robin Hood into a tale of a futuristic 23rd century Britain that has been devastated by an environmental catastrophe.

In the show, Robin is a 14-year-old female hacker and thief who lives amongst the impoverished 99%. She leads a band of rebels that are determined to overthrow the dictatorship of the Sheriff of Nottingham who lives in a custom built Upper City that houses the wealthy citizens of Sherwood.

The show is adapted from an idea by the producing team, Diana Manson and Megan Laughton of Baby Octopus, a New York based production company. They came to Justin with the idea after YouTube showed interest back in 2016.

“I fleshed out some characters and a story-arc and then wrote a pilot script, which YouTube loved! They commissioned 10 episodes on which I served as Head Writer. The show is aimed at the pre-teen market, with a dynamic voice cast led by Joseph Fiennes (The Handmaid’s Tale) who plays the evil Sheriff”, notes Justin, “With Robin being a 14-year-old girl, the show is very much focused on positive female empowerment”.

The series debuted on 6th March and Ep 1 has had over seven million views to date. Below you can watch the pilot episode for free, and then all 10 episodes if you subscribe to YouTube Premium (of which the first 30 days are free!).

“It’s great fun and really worth a watch. Huge congratulations and kudos to Justin for whom this has to be a fantastic climax following a long and exciting journey” Jonny Persey, Director, MetFilm School “I get the feeling we’ll all be hearing more about this series”.
