Refocus: MetFilm School’s guide to getting the most out of 2018
As Christmas increasingly becomes a distant memory and we all settle back into our routines, you may have found the time to think about the year ahead. January has a reputation for being a tad sensible (Hello Dry January), but it is a prime opportunity to reflect, rethink and refocus. 12 months is a long time; act upon your curiosities, explore a new field or revisit a skill you’ve neglected.
As a provider of screen education, our new year’s resolutions are unsurprisingly creative or media focused. If you’re struggling to think of a new challenge for 2018, take a look at our guide below and inspire yourself.
Embrace a different media platform
While Netflix have upped their game in delivering a batch of fresh, original, binge-worthy productions*, remember there is a wealth of other places to access content. Instead of embarking on a hundredth rewatch of Friends, take a chance on something out of your comfort zone. VOD platforms such as MUBI, BFI Player and Curzon Home Cinema will help you become a more rounded, discerning viewer; each offering some welcomed curation to your viewing habits.
Alternatively, give yourself an aural upgrade by delving into the wonderful world of podcasts. Besides being a game changer for your daily commute, there are many impassioned series which provide immediate and thought-provoking discussions on contemporary topics.

Form new relationships
Integrating with an online community is all well and good, but it’s no substitute for face-to-face interaction. Whatever your location, there is likely to be a club, society or group in your local community that could help ignite or nurture your passions. If Film is your bag, research nearby community cinemas, film clubs, filmmaker afternoon teas and evening classes. These almost always welcome beginners and provide fantastic opportunities to meet like-minded creatives.
Remember: ‘Networking’ doesn’t have to be about schmoozing and business card swapping – it’s also about being inspired by others and developing your own voice and ideas.

Broaden your (creative) horizons
One of the most frequently heard utterances in the new year is – “I want to find a new creative outlet.” Learning an instrument, tackling design software and rediscovering creative writing are all firm favourites. Sadly, for some, the desire to be creative fades upon leaving school or university, with time instead being dedicated to furthering careers in other fields. But there is a unique pride and pleasure to be found in developing a craft or new skill, whether it’s simply a hobby, or perhaps preparing for a career change.
Capture your development and organise
Open your phone’s photo library. What do you see? For every well-judged photo, are there five further blurry party snaps or random screengrabs? Rest assured; you’re not alone. Throughout the year, take the time to capture more worthwhile creative photos, and then organise and backup all those images in folders for safe keeping. This is a great way to track your progress and reflect further down the line. If you’re a DSLR or film camera user, apply similar tactics. You’ll thank yourself in 2019. And if you’re already a synchronised whizz with everything in its right place, then well done – we envy you greatly.
