Met Presents Undergraduate Web-Series ‘Upstage’ – Watch Now

By Danny Kelly | Categorised in News, Student Stories

What’s Upstage?

Upstage is a web-series about a group of aspirational actors and their interconnected friendships. In the same vein as ensemble shows such as Parks & RecreationTeachers and Community, the core cast are unified by their careers and passions, but episodic narratives often explore the trials and tribulations of their personal lives. The show’s tone is both realistic and bittersweet, combining both comedic and drama elements.

Who’s behind it?

While this is the first time Upstage has been made available for public viewing, the first season was actually created in June 2015 by our BA Practical Filmmaking students as part of their Professional Practice module. For each episode, students’ roles on set would interchange, providing an opportunity to develop skills in different key areas. The project was overseen by Executive Producers and Co-creators Steve Pinhay (Head of Producing & MetGo) and Steve Rehman (Senior Tutor), both of whom offered insight and guidance based off their years of experience working within broadcast television.

The show also boasts an exciting partnership with Ealing’s Questors Theatre, who kindly offered their space up to the production team, and whose venue acts as as a focal point for the show and its identity.

When can I see it?

You can watch the show’s pilot episode below right now. You can then get your Upstage fix daily this week at 8pm through our Twitter & YouTube accounts. Or, if you prefer your viewing all in one go, we will be sharing all seven episodes – and a behind-the-scenes special – on Tuesday 17th May through all our social media channels.

Executive Producer & Met’s Head of Producing Steve Pinhay:

“Upstage represents a new departure for the Met – a web series made by students from a pre-existing concept and show bible using the Showrunner/Writers’ Room model of American comedy and drama series. Our cast and student crews have responded brilliantly to the challenge, delivering credible characters, inventive storylines and a high degree of production professionalism. Looking forward to the further adventures of Ellie, Ling, Dylan and Jerome”

Executive Producer & Met Tutor Steve Rehman:

“Creating a serialised show with the right balance of drama and comedic moments has been a creative challenge from the very start. The students of Met Film School did an amazing job in what was a very tight time frame. And the results are now on screen for you to see. I hope you enjoy the show as much as the students did making it”

In March we held an intimate screening of Season 1 within our original Ealing Studios sound stage, Stage 5. In attendance we had many of the show’s cast and crew, key tutors and students. The response from everyone involved has been extremely positive – we hope you enjoy the series too! Check out our photo album from the event.
