Language Level Requirements

Approved Secure English Language Test (SELT)

Students who are from outside the EU (and EEA countries) must provide evidence that their English language ability is up to standard for the programme they have applied. This must be evidenced in the form of a UKVI Approved Secure English Language Test (SELT).

The UK government recently announced important changes to Secure English Language Tests (SELTs) for visa purposes. If you need to prove your English language level for a UK visa application, you will need to take your IELTS Academic test at a centre which has been specifically authorised by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) i.e you will specifically need to sit the IELTS for UKVI test.

From 6 April 2015 anyone who is required to sit an Approved Secure English Language Test (SELT) as part of their UK immigration application will need to make sure that they only use one of the providers on the new SELT list. This list has dramatically decreased with only two SELT providers left, IELTS and Trinity College London. IELTS tests can be taken around the world, but Trinity College London tests must be taken in the UK.

International non-EEA students taking a test on or after 6th April 2015 that they intend to use in a UK immigration application must take the “IELTS for UKVI (Academic) test” at the approved test centres listed here

Anyone who has taken a previously approved test on or before 5th April 2015 may still use it in a UK immigration application until 5th November 2015 providing the test is one of those detailed in the list of Transitional SELTs (Secure English Language Tests) which can be found here.
